Long ago on this earth, there was a woman called Miyakma and she was all alone.
There was no one else around.
The time came for Miyakma to find a mate.
But there was nothing on earth called a human.
Only Sikewa and Mankewa were there [two bird types].
Then they [birds] discussed who Miyakma might meet as a mate, and
They decided to have her meet Khomda from the sky, and the Kekuwa bird, from among the Sikewas, went up to Khomda's.
He brought down a comb made by Khomda and showed it to Miyakma. Then he said "do you see up there in the sky that thing shining like a lamp?" he asked, and Miyakma said "yes, I see it.
Then they showed her the comb.
When they said "will you elope with him", she said "I will."
"How beautiful his articles are.
He must be beautiful as well.
Why wouldn't I go" she said.
Then they fixed a date, and Khomda came to get Miyakma.
When he came to her house, Miyakma saw that he was an old man with a huge goiter.
Then Miyakma said "I will not go with this very ugly, goiter-ridden one" and she got very angry.
Then Khomda gathered all the gods of all springs on earth, and peed into an indentation in a stone.
He peed and returned home.
Two or three days later, all the water on earth dried up.
Miyakma was very thirsty and fell asleep in the shade of a big tree.
Then Jikiyongma brought pee in her tail and wet Miyakma with it.
Miyakma said: "Oh, Jikiyongma where did you get this water from, tell me; I am go terribly thirsty."
And Jikiyonga said "I saw it over there.
Do you want to go drink" she asked, and Miyakma said "yes" and they walked there.
They came to the place where the water was, and Jikiyongma showed her the water, and Miyakma drank.
And that day, or the next, Miyakma became pregnant.
Later, when her time finally arrived, Miyakma was ill and the two birds examined her.
They determined that Miyakma would first give birth to a thorny plant, then to a tiger, a bear, a monkey, and last of all to two humans, Mini and Irma.
Miyakma gave birth to these children just like [was determined in ] the divination.
First of all, the thorn-laden thorny plant was born, and it scratched its mother's womn, and she bled a lot.
That's why when women give birth there is lots of blood.
Later Miyakma's children all took different paths:
the thorn wrapping around [trees] with its thorns, the tiger goes this way and that, up and down, hunting, the bear, acting lazy and eating a lot, the monkey, jumping around and destroying things, Mini wearing a headdress and inspecting everyone, Irma, staying with her mother.
The tiger went everywhere around the earth, killing deer and goats, without being seen.
Mini went here and there, up and down, looking and taking care of his mother and sister.\
Miyakma worried a lot, because the tiger was going all over the place.
"Don't go so much" she said, and the tiger told his mother Miyakma "when I roar in the depths, look to the ridges.
When I roar from the ridge, look down in the depths" he said [he's so fast that by the time the sound carries, he's in the opposite place]
Then one day, Mini was sitting up in a tree, when the tiger saw the shadow of his headdress down on the ground.
And when that shadow moved with the wind, he tried to catch it.
Mini told his mother "Be angry with him, tell him to hold still, otherwise, I will shoot and kill him with my bow and arrow"
Then one day, the tiger made Mini very angry.
Mini killed him.
Miyakma felt what had happened, and she got angry with Mini and told him: "Bring the tiger's destroyed bones"
She placed his bones one after another, and roused him after ten days, and the tiger said "Hey, how long has it been that I was sleeping?" and woke up.
His mother said "Yes, you slept. Your father [=brother, but term used in anger] shot and killed you with his bow and arrow. You didn't know."
From then on, Mijakma started to worry more and more about the tiger.
Wherever the tiger went, she followed him there, and one day the tiger broke his mother's throat and killed her.
When Mini found out, he said "arrange the body carefully" and sent the bear.
But the bear, instead of arranging and placing his mother's dead body, ate the whole thing.
After he ate her, he returned.
Then Mini saw mother's hair wrapped around in his teeth .
"You ate mother!" he said and hit him over the head with a wooden mallet.
That's why bears have flat heads.
After he hit the bear on the head like that, the bear vomited up everything.
"You need to vomit" he said and hit his head.
Because the bear vomited, it is said, even now, that if we are hit on the head, we vomit.
After he [bear] vomited like that, Mini picked up his mother's bones.
He lined them up one after another, and sprayed them in the evening and at dawn with special grain beer.
He did this again and again, and on the seventh day, his mother woke up.
"Goodness, how long have I been sleeping?" she asked as she woke up.
And Mini said: "yes, you were sleeping. Your child killed you and you didn't know it".
Then Miyakma and her two children Mini and Irma stayed together.
Time passed and they grew up and it became time for Mini and Irma to find mates.
But there weren't any others called humans anywhere on earth.
So Miyakma made her two sibling children husband and wife.
Khomda heard about this and came down to their place and said: "you have done something very inauspicious.
You will all become sinners.
Go down inside the Earth, to sweep out your inauspicious actions, you sinners.
Then come up only once the Earth opens up" he said.
And Khomda did that, and they all went down into the Earth.
Down inside the Earth, they reproduced many times and lived.
Things continued like this for a while, and they searched for an open path in the Earth, but decided that first they had to perform a sacrifice.
They discussed what they should do a sacrifice with, and searched, and found a small bird.
After they sacrificed the bird, the Earth opened, and one brother got out.
But others could not get out, and the Earth closed up again.
They were trapped.
Then they talked about how they would get out and decided to cut one of their sibling's baby fingers off and offer its blood.
They determined that the Earth would then open and they would all escape.
So they decided like that to cut the finger.
But they had to discuss who would do the cutting, and they made their brother do it, but he was afraid to cut.
He closed his eyes and raised the knife, and when he cut, it wasn't the baby finger but the neck.
After that, the Earth opened up.
Everyone escaped from down inside.
They discussed what to do with their dead sister.
They again reached a decision and decided that there were those who died of old age and those who died by accident, "we created two ways [of disposing of bodies]" they said.
They said that however a person has died, it should not be difficult to show the path [for dealing with body], "We will create a path for dying".
Even today we Thulung follow this "death culture", and this is the story of that.
