I want to tell you this story that happened in 1943,
when the war was over, after the 8th of September.
After the 8th of September 1943, when the war was over, lots of people were angry at those who were in command, here in our village (=Acquaviva)
They went to the local authority, took the papers, threw them all in the middle of the square and lit them.
On the same day another story happened, that they killed a youth.
Because they shot into the middle of the mass, and they killed a youth.
Well, if there are other things you want to know, go and read through the novel ‘Sèp aš Mena’, as it is all described in there.
However, that which I want to talk about now, is a different story.
Amongst these people – when the situation began to calm down –
was also my father.
The Carabinieri came to the house, to search for them: those who were there, those that weren’t there, those who had been causing that fuss.
That one (=my father)… heard what was happening, that the Carabinieri were looking for people,
(for) those who had gone to set (the papers) on fire and to wreck the local authority.
He disappeared, couldn’t be found, hid for three, four days, stayed hidden.
When the Carabinieri came to the house,
they detained that one… detained those that were there. They detained my uncle Giovanni.
They took him to Palata, they held him for three, four days.
He said ‘yes’ to everything they asked him, confessed everything, which… that… all that he hadn’t done, because he didn’t know anything.
They saw him like this and sent him home.
Arrestarono mio *zio Giovanni*.
