"Le vietnamien, langue officielle du Vietnam, est parlé nativement par plus de soixante-quinze millions de personnes au Vietnam et dans la grande Asie du Sud-Est, ainsi que par quelque deux millions de personnes à l'étranger, principalement en France, en Australie et aux États-Unis. La filiation génétique du vietnamien a parfois fait l'objet de débats considérables (Diffloth 1992). Des chercheurs tels que Tabard (1838) ont maintenu une relation avec les Chinois, tandis que Maspero (1912), bien qu'il ait noté des similitudes avec les Mon-Khmers, a plaidé pour une affiliation avec les Taï.
Cependant, au moins depuis les travaux de Haudricourt (1953), la plupart des experts s'accordent aujourd'hui à dire que le vietnamien et les langues Vietic apparentées appartiennent à la branche mon-khmère de la famille austroasiatique."
